Board Reviews, Supports Re-Opening Plans for School Starting August 17

At their regular monthly meeting on August 10, the Hot Springs School Board reviewed the status of the schools' re-opening plans, supporting the opening of school on the originally scheduled date of Monday, August 17. The district will continue to be at Level 2 - Normal In-Person Instruction w/Online Component, though principals have been working on slight to moderate changes in the schedule to maximize outdoor and larger space and testing of the Google Classroom setup. A summary of the school's "Return to Learn" plan and all four levels of school operations is available by clicking here. Slight to moderate alterations to the elementary and middle school schedules are being finalized by the principals and information will be added soon.

A reminder that students will be released at 1:30 pm all four days next week. The district has welcomed back teachers and reviewed the cleaning and safety protocols used by the custodial staff as well as modifications to their classrooms to allow for maximum social distancing in each classroom. On Monday the staff also received information from Hot Springs Psychiatrist Dr. Brian Wilson on the Social and Emotional effects the virus has had on our students, staff, and community. Dr. Wilson also gave staff information on what to look for and how best to respond as students return to a new normal.

As parents are making final decisions about whether to start with regular classroom instruction or an online option, the district has received various information to help them make that decision. The South Dakota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics again received guidance for parents and schools and the letter is available by clicking here. Regionally, Monument Health, a partner of the Mayo Clinic, distributed a question and answer letter from Mayo to parents providing more information on this same topic. That letter is available by clicking here.

The South Dakota Departments of Education and Health continue to partner to provide information and guidance to school districts and parents through webinars and documents. One such recent item is the COVID 19 Definitions paper that provides the most up-to-date symptoms for parents and schools to look for. Students and staff that demonstrate these symptoms will be inspected more thoroughly and may be referred to hospitals and clinics for additional testing. To review the "COVID 19 Definitions" paper, click here.

Hot Springs School District does have its secretarial staff back full time and are available between 8 am and 4 pm to assist parents in enrolling their students in either the regular classroom or the online option. For the Middle School/High School, call 745-4147 and for the Elementary call 745-4149.
