Elementary Curriculum

As part of the Strategic Plan, the school district will utilize its curriculum, instructional design and assessment practices to guide and ensure teacher effectiveness and student learning across all grades and courses. While the South Dakota Content Standards define grade level expectations, our teachers work in collaborative teams to design a rigorous and engaging curriculum for students.

In English Language Arts teachers use the following curriculum:

  • Preschool-5th Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)- While teaching skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) also builds students’ knowledge and vocabulary in literature, history, geography, and science. The program includes a range of titles to cover for each grade level, and each year builds upon the knowledge learned in the previous year.
  • Preschool-2nd Heggerty Phonemic Awareness- Program that focuses on explicit instruction for Phonemic Awareness/Phonological Awareness which are oral and auditory, and the focus is on the sounds in words.

In Mathematics teachers use the following curriculum:

  • Preschool-5th- Bridges- The curriculum focuses on developing students’ deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Bridges blends direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration. It taps into the intelligence and strengths of all students by presenting material that is as linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich as it is mathematically powerful.
