Did you know that South Dakota is one of six states that still lack a state-funded preschool program? Did you also know that the Hot Springs School District, for years, has valued the opportunities associated with preschool by providing the program to the children of Hot Springs without funding from the state or charging parents? Did you know that Hot Springs’s current preschool program was recognized as an Exemplary Preschool of Excellence by School Administrators of South Dakota (SASD)?
The deadline to register for our free, full day preschool program (half day program also available) is June 15th. Families will be notified after this to confirm placement in our program. Please reach out to Dr. Cumbow and/or Mrs. Trevillyan with any questions.

We are overjoyed with the announcement that the Fall River Community Foundation (previously titled the First Interstate Fall River Area Foundation) is partnering with the Hot Springs School District to support our efforts to provide an additional section of preschool beginning in school year 2025-2026. The Foundation is providing a matching grant up to $15,000.
Interested community members can bring donations to the school district's central office at 1747 Lincoln Avenue. Donations can also be dropped off at First Interstate Band to benefit the Preschool Funding Program. Individuals are also encouraged to contact their financial advisor to see if they are able to use this donation as a Qualified Charitable Distribution from an IRA.

We are excited to share with you that the 2025–2026 school calendar has been officially approved at the May 12th School Board meeting. This updated calendar includes 11 additional instructional days, a change that reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing the academic experience for every student.
These additional days represent more than just extra time in the classroom—they provide our students with increased opportunities for learning, enrichment, and academic growth. Over the course of a full K–12 educational journey, this change is equivalent to nearly one full extra year of instruction, giving our students a strong advantage as they prepare for college, careers, and life beyond graduation.
Our School Board remains dedicated to doing what is right for students. By increasing the time that our teachers are working with students, we are ensuring that our students have a strong educational foundation —one that allows them to be just as competitive in academic achievement, standardized assessments, scholarship opportunities, and different accolades.
We also want to highlight that this calendar reflects a careful and thoughtful process. The additional four contract days for staff were part of our negotiated agreement. Out of respect for that process, we were unable to share details of the calendar until negotiations were finalized. We appreciate your understanding.
Importantly, this change not only benefits students but also reflects the Board’s deep respect and appreciation for our outstanding staff, as we continue to allocate as much of our budget as possible toward supporting the professionals who make a daily difference in our children's lives.
We’re sharing this calendar with you now so families have ample time to make plans for the upcoming 2025–2026 school year. We thank you for your continued partnership and support in making our schools a place where students thrive.

Welcome to the Black Pipe Singers from White River.

We had two students place at the West River Math Competition. AWESOME job. Congrats to Sergio C who places 4th in the Advanced Category and to Donovan S who placed first in the same category.

Happy Morning Bison Families and Community. Today is another busy day in the HSSD. Our seniors are at the senior breakfast right now and their graduation rehearsal is later today. And before they officially head out for the day, they will walk the halls of the elementary for "senior walk." What a fun day for them! We are hosting the Black Pipe Singers from Norris Elementary this morning in our elementary. They will also be part of the Honoring Ceremony at 2:00 in the Bison Center (community welcome) to honor our graduating Native American students. Our 6-11th graders will be checking in their computers later this morning. If you see your 6-11th graders computer and/or charger at home still, they will owe you to bring that to school for them. : )

Seniors, we love you but the desks are meant to stay inside :)
