It is National School Lunch Program Week. National School Lunch Week (abbreviated as NSLW) is celebrated each year in October. It was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 to promote the National School Lunch Program (abbreviated as NSLP) and the healthy school meals included in it. School lunch is very important for children. Students who receive free or reduced-price school lunches are less likely to be food insecure (not knowing where their next meal will come from), have reduced obesity rates, and have better overall health. Research shows that by participating in the NSLP, children are more likely to learn better, because they are no longer hungry. Children who experience hunger in school have lower math scores, lower grades, and are more likely to be hyperactive, absent, and tardy. The NSLP provides nutrients to children who may otherwise be at risk of not getting enough of nutrients from particular foods or food groups. For example, research shows that low-income students that participate in both the NSLP and the School Breakfast Program have a much better diet than those who do not. Students who participate are consuming more fruits and vegetables as a result of the school meal nutrition standards that are part of the NSLP, requiring schools to serve whole grains, fruits, and vegetables in meals in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americas. A table of the meal pattern required by the NSLP can be found on the USDA website. In addition, it is estimated that just by participating in the NSLP, those who receive free or reduced-price meals experience reduction in obesity rates by 17%!

Please share this information with local businesses and parents of juniors and seniors. We are hosting a lunch and informational presentation for our local business owners to learn more about how we can invest in our youth and keep them in our community as skilled workers. This event will be taking place on November 4th from 11:30-1:00. Our juniors and seniors will be hearing from these three organizations at 1:00 and any parent that would like to hear the same information is more than welcome to attend. Knowing the opportunities out there that could potentially pay for your child's entire schooling will be valuable in discussions and decisions made at home.

From Love and Logic- When kids bring home disappointing grades, parents are often upset and respond with frustration, lectures, and even anger. The first thing to remember is that the responsibility for a child’s grades belongs to the child, not to us. Although it’s easy to blame ourselves when kids perform poorly, it’s very important for our mental health, and for the mental health of our kids, to remember the following points. • We can’t do the learning for our children. • Many highly accomplished individuals faced academic challenges in their youth. • Always respond with genuine empathy and understanding. Here are two examples that contrast typical parental responses, one delivered with anger and frustration and the other delivered with empathy. This… “Look at these grades! These are unacceptable!” Or this… “Oh man! I bet these grades are really disappointing for you. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. The good news is that this doesn’t change the way I feel about you.” This… “How many times have I told you to get your homework done, and you ignored me! I am sick and tired of reminding you! You're grounded!” Or this… “Oh man. I can understand getting too busy to remember to do your chores and your homework. What do you think you can do to help you remember your homework? Let me know if you want some ideas.” Instead of battling over grades, consider exploring my book, From Bad Grades to a Great Life! If it doesn’t completely change your life, I’ll buy it back! Thanks for reading! If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend. Our goal is to help as many families as possible. Dr. Charles Fay

The Hot Springs School District believes that our purpose is to prepare all students to succeed. It is our intent to partner with parents so they are active partners with the school in the student's education and success. Students, staff, and community must be involved in our decision making process. Schools and communities must be willing to change when it is in the best interest of the students. it is vital for the school, parents and the community to be committed to the academic excellence in our schools. In all things, it should be considered what is best for our students.

Mrs. White's high school class provided this jungle gym to the preschoolers. To say that they were excited is an understatement. The pictures below do not share how awesome is was to see some of our oldest students with our youngest students. There were at least a couple high schoolers that were surprised with some knee-height hugs.
