Sign up for free, weekly affirmation texts

The South Dakota Division of Behavioral Health, part of the Department of Social Services, has launched an SMS text campaign that shares weekly affirmations.

As we know work and life can be stressful, a small note or word of encouragement can make a big difference. This SMS text campaign will provide weekly affirmations, reminders, and positive notes to self from South Dakota Behavioral Health as part of their “Notes to Self” campaign.

Sign up on the SD Behavioral Health Weekly SMS Affirmations page. Once 100 individuals are signed up, weekly texts will begin. https://sdbehavioralhealth.gov/sms-sign-up

Parents of Middle and/or High Schoolers:

If you would take a moment to complete this survey, specific to the career and technical education at the Hot Springs School District, it would be greatly appreciated. We work with the Western Consortium in many projects and this is one. The consortium continues to enhance what each school district can do to provide for our students; their partnership was meaningful and continues to be with our new CTE building and the programs offered within. Examples are our chemistry, art, FFA, welding, construction, Family and Consumer Science programs.

Career and Technical Education Parent/Guardian Feedback

The purpose of this survey is to gather reflections from parents of middle and high school students regarding their knowledge of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that may be offered at your school.    Your responses will be used as part of the CTE Comprehensive Needs Assessment (CTE-CLNA).  The CTE-CLNA is a process of looking at the current CTE program to discover its strengths as well as perhaps challenges in order to identify opportunities to further strengthen the local CTE program.     Thank you for your input.

Members of the Hot Springs FFA were able to travel to the National FFA convention in Indianapolis this week. They heard from motivational speakers, watched National level contests, visited a college and career fair and student workshops. It was a wonderful learning opportunity for our Hot Springs FFA members and a memorable experience!

Attendance Matters
Chronic absenteeism is when a student misses 10% or more of the school year. That’s only 1.5 days a month – and it adds up— missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions—can translate into students having difficulty achieving in middle school and eventually graduating from high school.

Attendance is monitored at all grade levels. If your child misses 15 or more days of school this year, state and federal reports indicate your child as chronically absent. At the elementary and middle school level, this is also a part of the report card "grade" for that school building. Absences due to illness, appointments, family vacations, etc are all absences and can add up quickly.  For Hot Springs's school calendar, a student is labeled chronically absent when they miss 15 or more days of school.

As stated previously, nothing can replace direct instruction from our teachers. Online programs can provide learning activities and practice, but it does not replace the expert in the field nor the human touch that the classroom environment provides. Individuals that are more than ready to assist in creating a plan for your child to be at school more consistently consists of Mr. Klinkhammer, Mrs. Trevillyan, Mr. Nelson, Ms. Dumire, SRO McMillan, Dr. Cumbow, and your child's classroom teacher(s).

The Student Council is excited to announce a secondary school competition to support the Ronald McDonald House by collecting aluminum pop tabs! These tabs help provide funding for families with children receiving medical care, and it’s a simple way for our school community to make a big impact.

Here’s how it works:
• Each advisory class will collect pop tabs between now and December 11th .
• The advisory with the most pop tabs collected will win a pizza party sponsored by Student Council! 🍕
• Pop tabs can be collected in the plastic bag left in your mailbox.

Thank you for supporting our students in this meaningful cause.

Thanks,
High School Student Council
