Did you know that today is the half-way mark for third quarter ALREADY? My goodness is this year cruising. Midquarter is always a great time to have conversations with your student(s) to see how they are progressing towards their goals. If there are concerns or questions, as always, please reach out to your child's teacher. That conversation now is much more productive than at the end of the quarter. Let's make today a great day!

Our seniors visited Pierre to see the legislative process in action.

It would be amazing if some of our artistic students could be recognized in this state competition.

Greetings from the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office, I am reaching out today with some exciting news! Our 2025 4th Grade Student Essay Contest is open for entries! 😊
This annual contest is a component of Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month which is celebrated each May. The competition proposes to enable students to achieve a better appreciation of our state's history and historic resources, the stories they tell, and why they should be preserved for future generations. The theme is "This Place Matters", and students are asked to write an essay about any South Dakota location that is at least 50 years old, why it is a favorite place for them, and why it should be preserved. The contest is open to any 4th grade student in South Dakota, whether in public school, private school, or homeschool.
Each entry will be judged anonymously by volunteers based on the essay's quality of writing, content and theme, and originality of thought. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The 1st place winner will receive a $200 cash prize, the 2nd place winner will receive a $100 cash prize, and the 3rd place winner will receive a $50 cash prize. Each winner will also receive a signed plaque and a one-year family membership to the South Dakota State Historical Society. Depending on scheduling, our office will coordinate a presentation for the winners. The deadline for entries is Friday March 14th!
Attached to this email is the Contest Guidelines, Entry Form, and Advertising Flyer! All of this information, as well as previous year’s examples, can be found on our website at https://history.sd.gov/preservation/archhpmonth.aspx (scroll down!). If you are receiving this email as a teacher, school administrator, parent, or other, please distribute and share this information to as many 4th grade students as you can. We really appreciate any help getting the word out! We have found that students really enjoy this contest every year and it serves as a fun way to spread awareness about historic preservation in South Dakota. We are hoping for another successful contest this year!
